Johnson hopes to sneak into NBA Draft

Louisiana-Lafayette’s Tyren Johnson is hopeful he will hear his name called during the NBA Draft.

Johnson is projected to fall somewhere in the late second round at best, but more than likely go undrafted. That said, not getting drafted isn’t the worst thing in the world, and some folks actually think it’s better than going in the second round.

Johnson is a good athlete who can play multiple positions but is a little bit too streaky and undisciplined at times. By not getting drafted, he would be allowed to go work out for a number of teams and handpick the best situation. Sometimes, this is the better option.

Cajuns mourn passing of former coach

By Bud L. Ellis

When the Louisiana-Lafayette Rajin’ Cajuns hit the football field for the season opener Sept. 4 at Georgia, they will begin a season where they hope to improve from last season’s 6-6 mark.

They also will have heavy hearts, mourning the loss of a man who helped turn the football program into a success.

Nelson Stokley passed away June5 at age 66. Stokley led the Cajuns for 13 seasons, including a remarkable turnaround from a 2-9 showing in 1992 to a piece of the Big West Conference title during an 8-3 showing in 1993.

Stokley directed the Cajuns to the conference title one year later. He coached from 1986-1998 and ranks second on the school’s all-time victories list. He also served as the school’s athletic director from 1988-1992.

As a quarterback at LSU, Stokley played in the 1966 Cotton Bowl and the 1968 Sugar Bowl.

Stokley certainly will be remembered in the Cajuns’ first home game of the season, Sept. 11 against Arkansas State.
